Luxembourg / Brussels / Amsterdam 2010

24 august 2010 (tuesday)

today the son had planned for me to visit the city of luxembourg. as usual we did not leave the house until mid morning and made our way there by train which took about 2 hours.

luxembourg railway station

the city of luxembourg, also known as luxembourg city, is a commune with city status, and the capital of the grand duchy of luxembourg.

the son decided to have his hair cut at a barbershop there and it cost euro 20!

his new look after the expensive haircut!

took the train back to masstricht and it was already close to 7pm. made our own simple dinner and then it was relaxing ourselves in front of the tv till bedtime :)

25 august 2010 (wednesday)

brussels would be the highlight of today's itinerary.

for breakfast, the son and i each grabbed a kebah from maastricht train station and it was a really huge one with lots of vegetables; and it only cost euro 1.95 each :)

Brussels Central Train Station

the son checking the schedule for return leg to ensure we do not miss the train back to maastricht.

Brussels is a very charming and capital city of Belgium. Apart from its famous chocolates and beers, it is also head of the European Union and home of Tintin.

Manneken Pis, "little man piss" in English, is a Brussels landmark

see how house moving was being done there!

for lunch, it was nothing else but only mussels and belgium fries :)

and you just have to try their belgian waffle too!

by now, i was a little tired of going around and started missing home very much. anyway we got back to maastrict rather early and i could still go for a short walk before cooking dinner.

26 august 2010 (thursday)

it was my last day here with the son and we would be heading for amsterdam for a visit first before my flight home.

amsterdam main train station

we left my luggage at a locker at the train station before exploring amsterdam city.

and we joined a free walking tour.

Embedded into the sidewalk, between the sidewalk stones of the Ouderkerksplein and the square that surrounds the Old Church in the Red Light District is a fettered bronze/iron sculpture of a hand caressing a breast.

look at the houses which are slanted in one way or another and such slanted house is a common sight within the borders of the old parts of the city of Amsterdam.

and this is the narrowest house in the world measuring only one meter in width, located in Singel.

graffiti is a common sight here!

raw herring is a dutch specialty and the son queued just to get one for me to try. its expensive at euro 3.50 for a herring sandwich but it was very fresh and yummy :)

these are multi-storey 'bike'-park and not 'car'park next to the train station and look at the large number of bicycles parked there. its parked at your own risk as bicycle theft is very common.

finally it was time to bid goodbye to the son and it will be another 4 months before he graduates. till then see you son and hope you will be well and good!
